'Nehru
Trophy Boat Race' in Kerala, 56th Event on 9th August
2008 |
|

Nehru
Trophy Boat Race, the most colourful water sport in
Kerala, takes place at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha on
the second Saturday of every August. The major
attraction of the boat race is the competition of snake
boats, also known as 'chundanvallams' in Kerala.
The race course, having a length of about 1370 mtrs, is
divided into various tracks for this competition.
Advancing boats appear like fast moving snakes in the
water tracks, hence leading to the event being named
'snake race'. The oarsmen splash the oars in unison with
the rhythmic chants and beats of drum. The movement of
competing boats is so thrilling that the spectators get
in tune with the excited mood of the surrounding
uproars. This aquatic festival fosters a sense of unity
and sportsmanship, attracting locals and foreign
tourists alike.

Bollywood Super Saga -
LAGAAN - The story of Cricket-centric British India |
|
 This
is the story about the resilience shown by Indians when
India was under the British Raj. The movie, which is set
in the Victorian period of the British Raj, revolves
around the peasants from a barren village who are
oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the
peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the
taxes, the officers put forth a proposition to the
peasants. One senior officer offers them to cancel their
taxes for three years if their village team beats them
at cricket. After accepting this proposition, the
villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and
playing for a result that will change their village's
destiny. The film gathered critical acclaim and awards
at several international film festivals, apart from
winning many Bollywood awards.

Green Tip of
the Month |
|
Think green and
conserve electricity when and where you can. When you
leave for lunch and go home at the end of the day, turn
off the office lights. If it's bright outside, you may
even be able to work by sunlight. It is also important
to turn off your computer instead of letting it go into
'sleep mode' over night. According to a study from
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, one computer and monitor
left on all night for a year is responsible for one ton
of carbon dioxide emissions. Switching it off at night
and setting it to sleep when idle during the day can
reduce energy use by 80 percent. So please turn off your
monitors at night - it only takes a second!
